Aren't my three sock dolls just adorable?!?!? I'm always on the lookout for fun and picked up Dan Ta's Stray Sock Sewing
because I just fell in love with the critter on the front cover. The book is full of photos of these wonderful creatures, posed and captioned, all super cute. Dan provides a good set of basic instructions to make several different sock dolls--enough, I think, to get your own creative juices flowing.
Happy Thing was my first attempt at a sock doll and I stayed pretty close to the instructions (which are well illustrated); Little Piggie was my second and, again, I stayed pretty close to the instructions (but not nearly as close as with Happy Thing). Little Babuska is entirely my own creation. I had the pink part and kept picturing it as a hood or helmet or something like that. Then I realized she wanted to be the kerchief on a babuska doll!
Another thing I did differently that I didn't use buttons or beads at all. All the details are embroidered on. If I decide to give my sock dolls away as baby gifts, not having buttons or beads the baby could bite off is a big plus.
Some of the reviewers on amazon.com knocked the book because he doesn't give instructions for every doll--but that didn't bother me. The purpose of the instructions, I think, are to give a basic understanding of what can be done with socks, but then it's up to the artist to bring the socks to life.
